Excellent guide

We did the Colosseum tour and it was just amazing, our guide was really knowledgeable and really brought the place to life. The fact that we got straight in without waiting in line was worth the extra few bucks. The timing was just right and we had plenty of water stops as it was a really hot day. The guide made sure that wherever possible we got to stand in the shade. We were worried that our daughter would get a bit bored and restless, but even she said afterwards she wanted to go again. A great tour but once in any vacation is enough. Would highly recommend.

Don't attach any importance to how many five star reviews Dark Rome /City Wonders have on their own site. I've just written a three star review for their Colosseum by night tour and every time I hit submit it fails to send and comes back to me with the stars blank again. Presumably if I give them five stars it will send. So infuriating because I didn't want my feedback published but I did want them to see it. Looks like their system just filters out all the less glowing reviews. I was not happy that the 2 and a half hour tour only included 45 minutes actually in the Colosseum.

Dark Rome Tours is a waste of money......... facing the Vatican In Saint Peters square to the right is a small street with a Swiss Guard.

He passes out free tickets for the Papal audience for the next day. You go to the fence at 6:30 AM one hour before Dark Rome people show up and find a seat where the Pope Mobile passes by. The Pope sits at the top of the steps of the Vatican. Far from the audience.

There are large viewing monitors on both sides. Dark Rome Tours with their City Wonders Flag sat far behind everything. They received no preferential entry or seating.

Two days before you go , you receive an email saying they will do their best they can but cannot guarantee you a seat. By then you are already in Italy and stuck with them.

Boring!

We book with this service under Dark Rome. Hard to find in the mess above the metro. they carry flags that say City Wonders which is buried in their email, hard to see on a phone. First point of contact the guy checking names off was rude and it only got worse from there. We started our tour with a guide who was nice and well informed but boring. The audio headphones hurt your ears after just 5 minutes. The first hour and a half of the tour the guy talked about the social classes and where they entered. This could have been done in 5 minutes. We spent the first hour and a half sitting in a hallway of the Coliseum and not walking around to see the different areas. My 16 year old wanted to see the coliseum above all the other sites and he was BORED. I over heard another tour operator talking and she was going over what went on and how the site was used. At the hour and forty five mark into our tour, I collected our audio devices and gave them to our guide. THIS WAS THE BIGGEST WASTE OF MONEY. Rome is beautiful and full of history, this company is HORRIBLE and BORING!!! Book with them if you want to look at a hallway for two hours and have a guide show you print outs of pictures rather than exploring the site...

Hard to please everyone

Used Dark Rome for the Coloseum and Palantine Hill walking tour and it was fabulous. Guide was well informed and actually was an archeology student. I can see how the meeting point might be hard for some to find but our cab driver took us directly there with no issue. We had a medical emergency on our tour and the guide quickly called for medical assistance and we all waited until the ambulance arrived before proceeding. It was a teenager suffering from dehydration. Advice: drink plenty of water as it gets hot in Rome during the summer. I would recommend Dark Rome to everyone.

We used Dark Rome tours in Rome for Vatican tour and Colosseum tours in March of 2014. Both were excellent. They fulfilled advertised features such as small groups and skip the lines, clear directives on meeting places, and on the informative fun tour experiences themselves - given by highly knowledgeable and pleasant guides. The provided headphones and transmitter are a huge plus in order to hear the guides explanations AND stay together with group. We will definitely use them again given the opportunity! One could visit these locations on their own for less money but it would be hard to make the history come alive in such a manner as done by Dark Rome. Very memorable experience!

We Saved for 2 years to visit Rome and rest of Italy only to be aggressively pursued and badgered by two Pakistanis and a Bangladeshi at Colosseum and Spanish steps into buying selfie sticks and in my wife’s case roses. How did we know they were from Pakistan and Bangladesh - simple ,they asked us where we were from and when they heard the answer "England" they got chatty about cricket and where they were from. We did not buy anything from them but there intimidating attitude left a very bad taste and feeling about our first visit to Rome.Our advice is avoid street salespeople at all costs - specially ones who obviously do not look Italian

You mustn't use skip the line tours very often I'm afraid. I booked online the day before we went the Vatican and we queued for 20mins to get out ticket while outside there was a *** for miles around the Vatican. I know which one Id prefer. We didn't do a tour we just wandered around, also no where does any company advertise a private empty Sistine chapel tour, and I'm sure you would have to pay thousands per ticket to get such restrictive access. We had 3 tours, coliseum, ghost and legends, crypts and catacombs, all were exactly as advertised, excellent tours. Only downside was the meeting points, but with sensible planning and time to find we didn't have any problems. Also, we would have preferred more time in the coliseum, after and hour we left and were in palentine hill, maybe swap them around and leave people in the coliseum. Over selling

This company is a rip off. From New Zealand, trip a reward for our son gaining scholarships and A grades at university in.... Roman history and first big O.E. for middle aged parents! Collesium obviously the high point but thanks to dark Rome tours became low point. We were at meeting place 45 minutes prior sitting chatting with guides etc seemed pleasant but... Time came to get into group totally different attitude.. they had over sold so bumped us off the tour!!!! We had receipt, booking number, confirmation email the lot but no go for us. Guides and representatives rude and walked off saying our shift is finished. No help from head office which is in Dublin Ireland anyway which is so helpful when you are in Rome. We were absolutely gutted. No refund no solution no rebooking offered. Shame on them.

Impossible To Find, Rude To Work With

The wife and I wanted to do a night tour of the Colosseum, so we did some research online and Dark Rome was recommended a lot. So we purchased two tickets for roughly $240 -- pricey, but hey its Rome. So we arrived to at the Colosseum about 40 minutes prior to our tour time and could not find the meeting place. We asked staffers at the Colosseum, we asked other tour guides. No one could get us to the meeting point described on the tickets. Needless to say we could not find our tour, fortunately there are a number of tours being sold right in front of the Colosseum and a really nice Italian lady got us into a new tour for 100 Euro and we saw the ruins and the Colosseum. After showing the meeting instructions to the new tour, they shook their head and said even Italians couldn't find that with those instructions. After we arrived home, I sent the folk and e-mail, not expecting anything because I assumed I got screwed deliberately. I got a response that said the other tour members where able to find it, and therefor it wasn't hard to find. I would think that after admitting to me that we did not attend the tour, they would have made some offer of a partial refund, however they simply said they'd give us another tour - for 15 euro more each. Great way to treat customers. The Colosseum is amazing at night, but you can do much better at the venue than Dark Rome and you won't face the chance of getting screwed.

Rip off Tour of the Colosseum

Booked a Colosseum Tour with Dark Rome by reading Tripadvisor reviews. The experience with Dark Rome was horrible! The customer service was so bad and disorganized that sent my family and I to the meeting point of another of their tours. The Dark Rome tour coordinator offended my wife and kids just because we were 7 minutes late. The tour itself was horrible, boring and not interesting at all. My friend also wrote a complaint for the Vatican Tour with Dark Rome. Avoid it and do not book any tours with Dark Rome when you visit Rome or italy in general!!

SKIP THE LINE? SKIP DARK ROME!

I booked a Vatican Tour with Dark Rome for my family of 4 and it was a rip-off! There were many people in our tour, the customer service was horrible and did not assist us at all before the tour when we called to ask questions about the meeting point. The Sistine Chapel was amazing but because of this company the experience of the Vatican was horrible! I had to book with the Hotel the next day in order to get a clear understanding of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. Don't book with them, it will save you time and money!

VATICAN TOUR IS A SCAM

I took a Vatican tour with Tiffany and it was terrible. The tour was with a big group, we were not in the Sistine Chapel alone as promised and when I called Customer Service they were very arrogant. The "skip the line" as advertised is a SCAM, we had to wait in line for over 30 minutes to get headphones!! I was looking forward to see the Vatican Museums for a long time, I bought this tour for my wife as she is very religious and Dark Rome ruined my whole experience!!! The guide was terrible, I could not ask any questions. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!!!!
